PAINTING CLASSES

Learn to paint with acrylic painting classes for beginners and improvers. Classes introduce a range of practical painting skills through weekly projects.

Maximum of 12 students per class. Classes cost between $40-$46 per week with ALL materials provided.

Spaces are limited and a minimum number of students is required to go ahead.

ACRYLIC PAINTING FOR BEGINNERS

WORKSHOP

SATURDAY 6TH JULY 9.30-3.30PM

Always wanted to give painting a go? In this one day workshop you’ll learn everything you need to get started including:

what paints and brushes to use

introductory colour theory

how to apply paint and create different brushstrokes

We’ll spend the morning learning the basics and the in the afternoon we’ll put it all together and paint a simple landscape painting.

This course is suitable for complete beginners or people who want to get back into painting after a long break.

Snacks provided. Please bring lunch for a half hour lunch break.

STILL LIFE ACRYLIC PAINTING

WORKSHOP

SATURDAY 3RD AUGUST 9.30-3.30PM

Held at Creative Arts Napier, 16 Byron St, Napier

In this one day workshop you’ll learn how to take your painting to the next level through careful consideration of form and colour. We’ll cover:

  • how to create a realistic sense of 3D form
  • how to paint effective shadows
  • planning and using colour combinations

In the morning we’ll experiment with practical painting techniques and in the afternoon we’ll work on creating a ‘still life’ painting (objects) from a photograph.

This course is suitable for people who have taken workshop 1 or who have a basic understanding of mixing and applying paint and want to refine their skills.

Watercolour paint is a wonderfully fresh and fluid medium to work with but it comes with some technical challenges.

In this beginner art class Emily will take you through short painting projects to introduce you to key watercolour painting techniques. By the end of this course you’ll be equipped with the skills needed to take on your own watercolour painting projects.

You’ll learn:

  • what materials to use
  • how to mix watercolour paints
  • wet-in-wet painting technique
  • layering and glazing

If you’ve always wanted to try watercolour but you don’t know where to start, this is the class for you!

All materials provided, as well as tea/coffee/snacks during the break.

PAINTING PROJECTS - TECHNIQUE

Get better, faster! To get better at anything takes time and practice and that’s exactly what this course is designed to give you. 

Over eight weeks Emily will lead you step by step through several painting themes, enabling you to produce 2-3 finished paintings that you can be proud of. Each project will focus on a specific subject and technique.

You’ll gain:

  • practical acrylic painting techniques
  • one-on-one feedback as it relates to your own skill level
  • confidence and progression in your painting ability

 

This course is suitable for people with a basic understanding of how to mix and apply paint colours and who are comfortable working at their own pace. If you are a complete beginner this course may still be suitable if you are happy to jump straight in to painting!

All materials provided. Students are welcome to bring canvases and their own paints if preferred.

DEVELOP YOUR STYLE

PROGRESS COURSE

An opportunity for people who are already painting to develop and refine their style through weekly practice and feedback.

If you are serious about improving your painting level and developing a series of paintings, this course is for you. Through guided individual tasks you’ll be encouraged to build on your strengths and refine your style.

This course is designed to help you figure out:

  • your painting strengths and interests
  • how to develop your ideas
  • how to refine your unique painting style

Please note that this class primarily self-directed with guidance and feedback from the tutor and other students. You must be comfortable mixing colours and painting in your chosen media.

All basic materials provided, students will need to purchase canvases if desired.
