Join The Pencil Room for a series of workshops with local artists happening across Hawkes Bay from 15th – 18th October, 2020. Each workshop includes an introduction to the artist’s work and a practical workshop based on their area of expertise. Be inspired, learn tips and techniques and make some art!  For ages 16+.

Geometric Sculpture

Chika K. Lindsay (BVA) is a contemporary Japanese artist living in Hawkes Bay. Her primary engagement is creating sculptural artworks that feature refined, pure and simple-lined forms. She enjoys investigating sustainable materials from a contemporary point of view while also incorporating Japanese aesthetics. Join Chika as she presents recent works of drawing and sculpture and takes you through a practical sculpture workshop based on key concepts of her practice.

Hand-Drawn Type & Illustration

Originally from Brazil, Mauricio Benega (BVA) lives and works as a full time artist in Hastings where he runs Studio Benega Ltd. Mauricio works as a painter, designer, illustrator, muralist and more. He enjoys working on different projects and experimenting as a way of staying inspired. Join Mauricio for this fun and creative workshop where you will experiment with images, icons, words and imagination to create your own original artwork.

Gillian Appleby

Experimental Drawing

Gillian Appleby (BA&D) is a painter and illustrator who studied at Ideas School in Hawke’s Bay and currently resides in Auckland. Gillian works with oil paint and graphite to create soft focus enigmatic portraits and dream-like imagery. In this creative workshop you will experiment with using pencil powder to create a free-form drawing and then use this to inspire and build an imaginative  illustration of your own.

Contemporary Collage

Peter Madden (MFA) is a New Zealand artist well known for his use of collage. By recycling, deconstructing and reconstructing the printed image he creates 2-D and 3-D artworks that simultaneously evoke a sense of beauty and unease. Join Peter as he discusses the nature of collage as an art form and takes you through a practical workshop to explore the potential of this medium and create your own artwork.

Sculpting Art Toys

Glen is a sculptor who works in a range of materials. Through Northern Monkey Toys he makes limited edition art toys from ceramic clay and polymer clay. Designer art toys are collectibles created by artists or designers – for both the young and old to enjoy. Join Glen to view his collection of work and take part in a practical workshop where you’ll  learn tips and techniques to make your own original art toy.

John Lancashire

How Not To Paint

John Lancashire is a contemporary New Zealand artist living in Hawkes Bay who paints expressionist still life paintings using fine oils on canvas. John is represented by Muse Gallery in Havelock North and Parnell Gallery in Auckland. In this workshop John will take you through his methods and thoughts on creating an oil painting of a simple still life. No matter what your skill level, you’ll go home with an original painting to be proud of.
